Deep Tissue Massage: What It Is, Benefits and What to Expect

Deep tissue massage is one of the most requested treatments in Australia, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. It is not simply a "harder" massage. It targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue with slow, deliberate pressure, usually to treat a specific problem rather than to relax the whole body.

How it works

The therapist uses slow strokes and firm finger pressure to reach muscles that sit below the surface, often working across the grain of the muscle rather than along it. Techniques may include deep finger pressure, forearm work and slow, sustained strokes. Because the work is targeted, the pressure can feel intense β€” but it should stay within a "good sore" range, never sharp pain.

What it helps with

  • Chronic muscle tension and stiffness
  • Lower back and neck pain
  • Postural strain from desk work or driving
  • Recovery from sports or repetitive strain
  • Tightness that has not responded to lighter massage

What to expect during and after

A deep tissue session usually feels slower and more focused than a relaxation massage, and your therapist will often check in about pressure. You may feel some soreness for a day or two afterwards, similar to a workout, which usually eases with water and light movement. Tell your therapist straight away if the pressure crosses into real pain.

Is it right for you?

Choose deep tissue if you have a specific area of persistent tension or pain and you are comfortable with firm pressure. If you are new to massage, prefer a gentle treatment, or are recovering from an injury, start with a lighter style or ask a remedial therapist for advice first. Always mention injuries, pregnancy or medical conditions on your health form.
